Walk from the refugee route from Greece to FYR Macedonia

Will you join us Walking the Refugee Route from Greece to Skopje through the Mountains of FYR Macedonia? A group of us will be doing this from 29 April – 5 May 2018. We want to raise awareness that many refugees in Europe still face hardship and to raise vital funds for our work. You can help!

We have organised the walk including all food and accommodation and you will be joined by a bunch of 20-30 like-minded individuals all walking for refugees. You will need to:
– arrange your own travel to the start in Thessaloniki and from the finish in Skopje
– raise at least £2,000
– pay a £110 registration fee

To start, you need to register here

Day 1: Thessaloniki
Today we meet as a group in Thessaloniki and enjoy a welcome dinner followed by a briefing about the challenge ahead. Tonight we stay at a hotel in Thessaloniki.

Day 2: Idomeni
After breakfast this morning we transfer from Thessaloniki to Idomeni, the site of one of the largest unofficial camps in Greece and became symbolic of the crisis when the borders were closed.
Overnight hotel. Approx. 4-5 hours trekking

Day 3: Crossing the border
This morning we’ll enjoy breakfast at our accommodation before starting our trek following the undulating hills towards the Macedonian border. We’ll have a picnic lunch en-route before jumping onto the bus to cross the border.

Day 4: Dojran Lake
Straddled across Macedonia and Greece, Dojran Lake is 7.1km at its widest point with banks that are lined with fishing boats and stilted fishermen’s huts. After a picnic lunch we meet our bus that will transfer us to our accommodation in the border town of Gevgelija, the first town in Macedonia on the refugee route.
Overnight hotel in Gevgelija. Approx 4-6 hours trekking.

Day 5: Across the Hill
We’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast this morning to prepare us for our most challenging day trekking. From Gevgelija we transfer to the town of Krivolak where our trek to Dragoevo begins. Our route will take us along forest tracks through the hills into the Municipality of Stip. Upon arrival into Dragoevo we’ll transfer to our hotel in Stip for a good night’s rest.

Day 6: Mladost Lake to Katlanovo
This morning we transfer out of Stip to join the old road from Mladost Lake to Katlanovo and follow a route which was used by refugees. We’ll meet our transport for our journey into the Macedonian capital city, Skopje, and our final hotel. Tonight we’ll have a dinner to toast our achievements and reflect on our experiences.
Overnight hotel in Skopje. Approx 4-5 hours trekking

Day 7: Depart Skopje
Today we wave goodbye to our new friends.
There are Wizz Air flights to Luton

Q: Can you give me some idea of the terrain involved?
A: It is mostly woodland track, undulating hills, mix of paths and roadside. The plan is for walks of 4-7 hours a day and so if you are reasonably fit, it will be well within your ability. Also, we will have a mix of people on the walk and we will not be leaving anyone behind!
