Doliana, Greece

09/08/17

Another very isolated and small camp that we started helping August 2017. About 120 people living in cramped conditions and miles from any shops and services.

Invited by the UN Refugee Agency to see if we could provide food, it was immediately apparent that we could help the people on the camp and support Oxfam the site manager (now ASB). Our first task was an urgent distribution of food and milk. This camp is a long way from any shops and there were many needs.

We had to take a break from the camp from January-March 2018 while we focused on Katsikas but we are now going to Doliana every week.

We travel to Doliana every Sunday with a small team of volunteers to take orders and distribute food. Every refugee family has tokens they can ‘spend’ (the bigger the family, the more tokens they have). Volunteers take the orders for the following week with the smart application we use on a tablet computer. In Katsikas that week we then prepare the orders for each family and deliver it to them the following Sunday when we take the order for the following week.

  • Population: 70 Syrians with about half under 16
  • Services: weekly delivery of healthy food, essentials and comforts from Katsikas
  • Volunteers: Katiskas volunteers deliver and take next week’s orders every Sunday
  • Volunteer accommodation: many hotels and rooms available in Ioannina
