WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

Keeping cool in Katsikas

As temperatures rise in Greece, and heatwaves hit the UK over the bank holiday weekend, the kids at Katsikas have been rocking some cool summer looks.

This week, Katsikas camp welcomed a gorgeous new arrival to the world. Baby Yusef and mum returned from hospital both healthy and doing well, thanks to the extra nutrition provided to mum by Help Refugees during pregnancy, and the nappies and bed provided for little Yusef by Carry the Future now that he’s here.

We feel extra attached to Yusef and his family because our main man John took Mum to hospital for the birth. She was due to go on May 1 but because that was a public holiday she was left waiting for her ride. Of course, we were delighted to fill in.

There are currently 17 pregnant women residing at Katsikas camp. Pregnancy and labour is tough at the best of times, but managing away from both home and family, and then returning to a crowded refugee camp, takes unimaginable strength.

Whilst the living standards at Katsikas camp are higher than at many other camps, and we do all that we can to offer aid with dignity to every resident, raising a young family in a refugee camp is tough, and far from ideal.

We will do all that we can to help the make the women’s pregnancies as smooth as possible, and to make them feel comfortable and supported. But as always, we need kind donors and volunteers to help us make this happen.

You can help us do this by donating or by getting creative to raise money for refugees . Alternatively, if you’d like to volunteer in a refugee camp and help us provide aid with dignity to young families, please get in touch today.

There’s no place like home – but for some, home is far behind

‘This week, we walked a short distance in their shoes. It was nothing compared to them, but it was something. We all need to do something.’

Last week, nineteen volunteers walked the refugee route through FYR Macedonia to increase awareness and raise money for refugees.

And they were incredible – racking up a walking total of over 101km in five days, and raising over £25,000 for refugees.

Our co-founder Paul blogged the journey, reflecting on the history of the route as the team followed part of the journey that thousands of refugees took before the northern Greek borders were closed in 2015.

Retracing the Refugee Route: Day 1, Idomeni

Retracing the Refugee Route: Day 2, FYROM

Retracing the Refugee Route: Day 3, Gevgelija

Retracing the Refugee Route: Day 4, Along the Railway

Retracing the Refugee Route: Day 5, A Destination

The team’s journey is over for now as they return home to continue to help raise awareness from afar. But for many refugees, the journey continues, or has only just begun.

You can still donate to the team’s fundraisers. Every penny goes towards helping refugees, so please show your solidarity by donating generously.
