THIS WEEK:

Updates on the empowerment fund

We’ve published an update on the success of our empowerment fund so far.

We launched our empowerment fund in August to help residents at Katsikas camp regain some independence and normality in their lives. We’ve seen the affects that being stuck in a refugee camp has on mental health, especially when there are many highly skilled and talented people on camp, eager to work hard.

We created the empowerment fund to help refugees financially, a sense of purpose and work to be proud of.

So far, the results have been mostly positive. There are some thriving ideas, and some new ideas launching on the horizon. One thing we have learnt is that people need a lot more contact from us so delighted that from Monday, volunteer Paula will be dedicated to supporting them for the next 2 months.

You’ll be thrilled to hear that some products aided by the empowerment fund will be available to purchase from our shop by Christmas.

We hope that the empowerment fund can continue to thrive, but we need your help and donations to make this possible. If you’d like to donate to refugees or fundraise for refugees, please get in touch today.

Here is a video of a perfume testing session of empowerment fund success, Salam Fragrances:

Staying informed – What We’re Reading

‘They do not need our vitriol nor our pity. Being a refugee is much more than a political status. It is the most pervasive kind of cruelty that can be exercised, robbing them of all aspects which make human life, not just tolerable but meaningful.’

This week, we’re reading a new volunteer story by, Bella, who at Katsikas camp this summer.

Volunteer story: Bella (September 18)

We’re also watching this video by The Guardian following the caravan of Hondurans on their exhausting and controversial journey to America.

La caravana: On the road with the migrant caravan – video

Since setting off from San Pedro Sula in Honduras, the caravan of refugees and migrants now trekking across southern Mexico has covered more than 1,000 kilometres in sweltering heat and torrential downpours. Members of the group are suffering from coughs and colds, blisters and sunburns, insect bites and eye infections. The journey, much of it on foot, is particularly hard for some 2,300 children who were among the group as of last week.
