RS Express – Empowering Refugees

25/10/18

THIS WEEK:

Empowering Refugees

In July, we launched our new Empowerment Fund Programme to help bring dignity and normality to refugees stuck in Greece. Our hope was that by offering budding businessmen and businesswomen the initial funds to set up their own micro-businesses, they could regain some independence.

And this new part of our model has already started to yield success.

The empowerment fund doesn’t only help those granted it, but it also helps others indirectly. For example, one recipient of the empowerment fund, Amal, teaches English to residents on camp. Not only is she helping others on camp learn new languages for an affordable price, but she also interprets for people in hospital or in desperate situations. Amazing!

Here’s a photo of Nour, one of our success stories, and his young daughter stocking their mini-market with sweet treats!

Volunteer stories

”Around many cabins I could see flowers, vegetables [. . .] chicken, pigeons and dogs. Some people built small terraces and thus tried to extend their living space. How lively and cheerful it seemed . . . Yes, but it also means that all these people have been stuck in here for a while, and will continue to be so for God knows how many months or years without the opportunity to work properly, to get an education, to live fully, to build a home . . .”

Thank you to volunteer, Andreea, for sharing her volunteer story this week. In this beautiful piece, Andreea reflects about her time helping refugees in Katsikas camp. There’s lots of fun on camp, but much sadness and frustration too.

Fortunately, we have great volunteers like Andreea helping on camp to try to make residents’ time on camp more peaceful and dignified.

We’re currently looking for volunteers to help at refugee camps in Greece during the beginning of next year. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact us today and check out our other volunteer stories to see what it’s like.

Raise money for refugees

Food, glorious food!

Well done to the amazing volunteers and bakers who raised a whopping $1,366 (£1,058) for refugees this week! You sure did rise to the occasion – and the proof is in the pudding!

We love it when volunteers think of fun and creative ideas to raise money for refugees. Every penny donated to Refugee Support goes towards helping refugees, and fundraisers like this help immensely.

Well done to this team and to all their supporters.

You can get a slice of the action next Monday when more delicious cakes will be on sale.

If you’d like to raise money for refugees, please get in touch to see how we can help you.
